Leading telecom operators now let Ugandans access the National Lottery directly from their basic mobile phones.

The National Lottery website highlighted the ease with which players can play via USSD codes. “Players can dial *278# or *185# on Airtel Money, *165# on MTN MoMo, or *252# via Tradelance to play the game, allowing even basic mobile phones to purchase tickets, check results and validate winnings without internet access,” the website stated.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to make the lottery widely accessible across Uganda, reaching both urban and rural communities and ensuring that participation is not limited by internet connectivity or device type.

Eric Mabuza Jnr, General Manager of ITHUBA Uganda, the official operator of Uganda’s National Lottery, highlighted the lottery’s mission.

“When we launched the Uganda National Lottery, we didn’t simply introduce a game. In March 2025, the operator named fintech firm Tradelance as an official channel distribution partner, enabling ticket purchases and win validations via USSD, mobile apps, ATMs and online platforms. Winnings of up to UGX 50m (€11,500) are processed within 48 working hours.

By early April 2025, the lottery had reached over 600,000 winners, with prizes impacting both rural and urban communities. Proceeds are earmarked for national development, including contributions toward Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 stadiums and facilities.

The lottery has also created economic ripple effects, generating jobs in marketing and retail, supporting small businesses, promoting financial inclusion and expanding offices in Mbarara, Mbale and Gulu.

The Lottery Authority also prioritises transparency, responsible gaming and player support.
