The shift to multi-year regulatory certainty is reshaping the East African betting landscape and creating a framework that allows companies to consolidate locally and prepare for&nbsp;<strong>growth across the continent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, operators in Kenya faced&nbsp;<strong>one-year approvals<\/strong>&nbsp;that left little room for planning or expansion. The new three-year default period signals the government\u2019s intent to position the country as a&nbsp;regional <strong>hub&nbsp;for betting and gaming<\/strong>. In contrast, <strong>Nigeria and Uganda<\/strong> still operate under <strong>short-term licences<\/strong>, which can deter foreign investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signed into law by President William Ruto on August 7, 2025, and effective from <strong>August 26<\/strong>, the reform replaces the uncertainty of <strong>annual renewals<\/strong> with a framework already drawing attention from industry leaders. Experts say the move could redefine&nbsp;Kenya\u2019s gambling sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Law firm&nbsp;<strong>Anyanzwa J.S &amp; Advocates<\/strong>&nbsp;said that Kenya\u2019s new three-year gambling licence has the potential to <strong>transform the industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKenya\u2019s adoption of a three-year gambling licence positions the country as a <strong>strategic hub<\/strong> for operators seeking to capitalise on\u00a0Africa\u2019s booming betting market. The stability allows operators to\u00a0<strong>invest in technology<\/strong>, responsible gambling tools and infrastructure in ways that were impossible under short-term licences\u201d, said the firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their insight underscores how multi-year licences can reshape operational strategy and attract&nbsp;<strong>long-term investment<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Market surge in gambling sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry is projected to generate nearly&nbsp;<strong>KSh831m (\u20ac772m)&nbsp;in 2025<\/strong>, according to an industry report, reflecting the rapid rise of betting in East Africa. <strong>Mobile-first betting<\/strong> dominates, supported by M-Pesa payments, which allow fast, secure transactions for millions of users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than <strong>100 licensed betting sites<\/strong> now operate in Kenya, with major brands such as\u00a0SportPesa and Betika\u00a0expanding regionally, highlighting the country\u2019s <strong>appeal to investors <\/strong>and its growing influence in the East African betting landscape.
