{"id":76,"date":"2025-04-02T05:26:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T08:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=76"},"modified":"2026-04-19T18:08:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T21:08:57","slug":"kenyan-gaming-operators-urge-tax-relief-to-boost-sports-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/kenyan-gaming-operators-urge-tax-relief-to-boost-sports-investment","title":{"rendered":"Kenyan Gaming Operators Urge Tax Relief to Boost Sports Investment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Gaming industry taxes account for 1% of Kenya\u2019s revenue in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya.- The <strong>Association of Gaming Operators<\/strong> (AGOK) in Kenya has called on the government to lower tax policies, a move that could see them increase investment in the local sports industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AGOK chairman <strong>Sasa Krneta<\/strong> made the remarks at the association\u2019s <strong>annual executives\u2019 gala<\/strong>, which was held in Nairobi on Friday, March 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Krneta, the government should view itself as a partner rather than just a regulator, considering how much the industry contributes in taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krneta said: \u201cOur members in AGOK continue contributing immensely to the development of sports through sponsorships, and this has gone far in developing talent and creating employment for hundreds of young Kenyans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2024 alone, the gaming industry contributed over Ksh 24 billion (\u20ac171.6m) in taxes, which accounts for a little over 1% of total national revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said that the gaming industry employs around <strong>10,000 people<\/strong> and that about half a million Kenyans rely on it \u201cin one way or another,\u201d making it a vital part of the country\u2019s economic fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn top of that, gaming companies invest heavily in sponsorships, and CSR, supporting sports, health, education and local communities. We estimate that around 1 billion KES was invested into sponsorships and CSR projects in 2024.\u201d Krneta added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gala was attended by government officials and key <strong>private stakeholders<\/strong> from the betting, lottery and gaming industries.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO <strong>Harold Ndege<\/strong>, who also spoke at the event, assured operators of the federation\u2019s willingness to partner with them to promote the development of football in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cAt the heart of our transformation is a commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism. We are establishing strong governance structures to ensure football operations are efficient, ethical and financially sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery partnership, investment and decision within our federation is driven by a clear purpose, to grow the game with integrity and trust.
