{"id":7573,"date":"2025-09-02T05:26:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T08:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=7573"},"modified":"2026-04-19T14:19:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T17:19:44","slug":"ghana-football-association-and-police-join-forces-to-stop-illegal-betting-and-protect-legal-wagers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/ghana-football-association-and-police-join-forces-to-stop-illegal-betting-and-protect-legal-wagers","title":{"rendered":"Ghana Football Association and police join forces to stop illegal betting and protect legal wagers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ahead of the 2025\/26 Premier League season, the Football Association and the police have collaborated to protect legal betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Ghana.- The <strong>Ghana Football Association (GFA)<\/strong> is teaming up with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Service to tackle illegal betting,<strong> protect legal wagers<\/strong> and ensure Ghanaian football remains fair and credible ahead of the 2025\/26 Premier League season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GFA President <strong>Kurt Simeon-Okraku<\/strong> met with CID Director-General Commissioner of Police <strong>Lydia Donkor<\/strong> at the Police Headquarters on August 25 for a high-level discussion focused on three key challenges facing the game: illegal betting, match manipulation and hooliganism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simeon-Okraku said, according to GFA Communications: \u201cAs we prepare for a new season, we want to strengthen our relationship with the Police Service to fight the canker of match manipulation, clamp down on <strong>illegal betting activities<\/strong> and ensure that violence and hooliganism are rooted out of our game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasised that the GFA is committed to protecting the integrity of competitions while fostering a safe and<strong> transparent environment<\/strong> for players, officials and fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This joint initiative forms part of the GFA\u2019s broader stakeholder engagement strategy as the Premier League season kicks off on September 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Illegal bets out, legal wagers safe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"684\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/09\/GHANA-POLICE-684x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7580\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kurt Okraku and Lydia Yaa Donkor join forces to tackle illegal betting and safeguard regulated wagers ahead of Ghana\u2019s 2025\/26 Premier League season.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Donkor also welcomed the collaboration, highlighting football\u2019s national significance. \u201cWe consider football a national treasure and an avenue for unity, development and pride. The Police Service, through the CID, will continue to stand with the GFA in addressing emerging challenges such as<strong> corruption in sports<\/strong>, violence at match venues and illegal <strong>betting practices<\/strong>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GFA and CID are particularly focused on illegal betting, a persistent <strong>threat to fair play<\/strong>.
