The sector is projected to reach $2.39bn by 2025 and&nbsp;$4.14bn by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 11.62 per cent, according to a Market Research report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mobile dominates the market, accounting for more than <strong>90 per cent of gaming revenues<\/strong>. Affordable smartphones and <strong>wider internet access<\/strong> fuel this growth, while platforms like M-Pesa in Kenya, EcoCash in Zimbabwe and PariPesa in Nigeria enable\u00a0instant deposits and withdrawals, reshaping how Africans engage with betting and gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M-Pesa, EcoCash and PariPesa remain central to providing reliable payment channels for millions of bettors, but these platforms are<strong>\u00a0increasingly under threat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to INTERPOL\u2019s 2025\u00a0Africa <strong>Cyberthreat Assessment Report<\/strong>, cybercrime constitutes more than 30 per cent of reported crimes in\u00a0<strong>West and East Africa<\/strong>. In response, INTERPOL launched Operation Serengeti 2.0 between June and August 2025, targeting scams that affected almost\u00a0<strong>88,000 victims<\/strong>. The crackdown led to\u00a0<strong>1,209 arrests<\/strong>\u00a0and recovered nearly $97.4m, underscoring the scale of threats facing mobile gaming and betting platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fraud is getting smarter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraud is becoming<strong>\u00a0more sophisticated<\/strong>. Traditional document forgery is declining, but synthetic identity fraud, powered by AI, deepfakes and\u00a0<strong>digital forgery tools<\/strong>, is on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports from identity verification and&nbsp;fraud-prevention companies&nbsp;Sumsub and Smile ID highlight generative AI and insider-assisted schemes exploiting fintech and betting platforms, putting <strong>millions of users at risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrew Novoselsky<\/strong>, Chief Product Officer at Sumsub, warned: \u201cFragmentation is one of the biggest threats in modern risk management.\u201d His firm\u2019s AI-driven verification tools help operators in Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya reduce losses, speed up account checks and protect players from complex fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Meredith<\/strong>, Senior Vice President for EMEA at Xsolla, a leading provider of payment solutions and business services for the gaming industry, emphasised&nbsp;secure transactions. \u201cBetter integration of mobile money is critical to help Africa\u2019s gaming industry reach its full potential,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public concern mirrors these developments. A KnowBe4 2025 survey shows that&nbsp;58 per cent of Africans&nbsp;now&nbsp;<strong>worry about cybercrime<\/strong>, nearly double the 2023 figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In South Africa, TransUnion\u2019s 2025 State of Omnichannel Fraud Report identifies\u00a0online betting and poker platforms\u00a0as key targets.
