Politician <strong>Byron Browne Jr<\/strong>. defended the gambling sector as a <strong>legitimate contributor<\/strong> to the economy, pointing out that the government generates \u201cover three million United States dollars&#8221; each year from gambling entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modad, who <strong>resigned<\/strong> from President Joseph Boakai\u2019s administration in October 2024 amid <strong>controversy<\/strong> over a vehicle procurement deal, argued that gambling preys on Liberia\u2019s vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGambling and sports betting must be banned,\u201d he said. \u201cGambling has become a pervasive epidemic that is quietly yet devastatingly destroying our society. The next issue that must be addressed and <strong>ultimately banned<\/strong> from our society is gambling and sports betting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Browne Jr hit back, defending the gambling sector as a crucial part of <strong>Liberia\u2019s economy<\/strong>. \u201cAren&#8217;t you aware that gambling is <strong>legal<\/strong> under our Liberian law and contributes toward our national budget annually? There&#8217;s also a general <strong>warning attached<\/strong> to betting that says &#8216;betting is prohibited for underage.&#8217; I disagree with you that gambling should be banned. You&#8217;re not reading. Meme Potter said: \u201cSo you want all casinos to close too? Are you to yourself. Don&#8217;t you know most developing countries have such and this has a profitable impact in the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brent Gian tied his <strong>criticism<\/strong> to Modad\u2019s resignation over the vehicle procurement controversy, saying: \u201cYou bought that big car that that made you walked out of govt. I disagree with you that gambling should be banned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pius Kollins added: \u201cHe&#8217;s just <strong>insane<\/strong>, my question here is &#8211; What is the significance of the Liberia National Lottery, if there should be a ban on gambling?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate highlights Liberia\u2019s struggle to balance social concerns with economic realities.
