Peter Solo<\/strong>, emphasising the authority\u2019s commitment to keeping the sector free from criminal exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solo said: \u201cOur duty is to ensure that the NLA is not only compliant with the AML\/CFT Act of 2021 but is also leading the <strong>fight against money laundering<\/strong> and terrorist financing in the gaming sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"489\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/LIBERIA_PIC-489x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/LIBERIA_PIC-489x600.jpg 489w, https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/LIBERIA_PIC.jpg 528w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">National Lottery Authority\u2019s Peter Solo launched the new unit to block criminal exploitation in the sector.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Solo emphasised that the launch of the unit is about initiating action. \u201cOur mandate is clear: we will not allow the NLA to be a conduit for illicit funds. This unit has the authority, resources and expertise to <strong>ensure full compliance<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fighting money laundering in gambling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The AML\/CFT Compliance Unit will serve as the <strong>NLA\u2019s internal enforcement body<\/strong>, ensuring gaming operators follow the law. It will strengthen oversight of licensed operators and collaborate with the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) and other institutions to prevent misuse of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FIA, Liberia\u2019s central authority for financial intelligence, enforces AML\/CFT laws, monitors compliance and works with institutions like the NLA to prevent the gambling sector from being <strong>exploited for money laundering<\/strong> or terrorist financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hon. Richlue Burphy<\/strong>, Deputy Director General for Lotto Games and the NLA\u2019s FIA focal person, will chair the unit, which also includes several other appointed members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burphy said: \u201cThis unit is more than just a regulatory formality; it is a frontline defence for the integrity of Liberia\u2019s gaming industry. We will work tirelessly to identify, monitor and prevent any attempts to use our sector for<strong> money laundering or terror financing<\/strong>. Compliance will not be optional; it will be the <strong>standard<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The need for the unit is underscored by recent enforcement actions. On August 8, 2025, the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) imposed a L$6m (\u20ac25,000) fine on 50\/50 Casino for major lapses in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism controls.
