Tiroeaone Ntsima<\/strong>, called for urgent intervention to prevent a surge in addiction and financial instability. He said: \u201cOur goal is not to eliminate gambling but to protect those who are most at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ntsima stressed that the challenge has moved beyond casual entertainment into a pressing social concern, with the research painting a human, not just statistical, picture of the crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further warned of the dangers posed by unregulated platforms, saying: \u201cOnline and illegal gambling platforms present serious dangers, especially to young people, as they exploit their vulnerabilities and lack safeguards to prevent addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ntsima concluded with a stark caution: \u201cWithout intervention, Botswana risked a surge in addiction and financial instability among its youth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the warnings lies <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/gambling-study-uncovers-alarming-trends-among-batswana-youth\">data from the Botswana Gambling Authority<\/a> and <strong>Integrated Research Hub<\/strong>, showing that <strong>36.6 per cent <\/strong>of the population, around <strong>850,000 people<\/strong>, are active gamblers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those, more than <strong>20 per cent<\/strong> are underage, with some starting as early as <strong>10 years old <\/strong>in informal games for small stakes. Young adults aged <strong>21\u201335 <\/strong>make up <strong>56 per cent <\/strong>of gamblers, and problem gambling affects <strong>6.7 per cent <\/strong>of the total, climbing to <strong>12 per cent<\/strong> among those using illegal platforms.
