{"id":6613,"date":"2025-08-14T04:06:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T07:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=6613"},"modified":"2026-04-19T14:50:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T17:50:13","slug":"namibias-first-state-lottery-nears-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/namibias-first-state-lottery-nears-launch","title":{"rendered":"Namibia\u2019s first state lottery nears launch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The proposed lottery is an initiative under National Development Plan 6 (NPD6), the country\u2019s medium-term development strategy set to cover the period from 2025 to 2031.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Namibia.- The <strong>Lotteries Board of Namibia<\/strong> has confirmed that the country&#8217;s first state lottery is in its final planning stages of preparation and is expected to launch <strong>within the next one to two years<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent interview, <strong>John Shimaneni<\/strong>, the Board\u2019s CEO, explained that work is underway to finalise legal, operational and procurement frameworks, while internal policies and regulatory systems are being developed to enable a phased rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shimaneni said: \u201cThe plans to launch the state lottery are at an advanced preparatory stage. We are currently procuring Transactional Advisory Services to assist with the appointment of a licensed lottery operator, in line with the Lotteries Act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proceeds from the lottery will be channelled into the <strong>State Lottery Trust Fund <\/strong>and directed toward priority areas, including youth empowerment, education, healthcare and community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shimaeni added: \u201cTo ensure transparency and accountability, a grant funding framework is being developed, along with independent audits and strict reporting requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board is also planning to introduce <strong>a responsible gaming strategy<\/strong> that combines public-awareness initiatives, age limits and support services with strict compliance requirements and ethical standards for licensed operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed lottery is an initiative under <strong>National Development Plan 6 (NPD6)<\/strong>, the country\u2019s medium-term development strategy set to cover the period from <strong>2025 to 2031,<\/strong> and address pressing challenges like economic growth, poverty reduction and sustainable development. The lottery is projected to generate more than <strong>N$100 million<\/strong> (\u20ac4.8m) in revenue by <strong>2030<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the domestic revenue boost, Shimaneni believes that the project will stimulate economic activity, create new job opportunities and contribute to the country&#8217;s overall growth and development.
