{"id":5877,"date":"2025-08-01T04:26:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T07:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=5877"},"modified":"2026-04-19T15:11:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T18:11:38","slug":"gauteng-mec-calls-for-urgent-amendment-to-gambling-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/gauteng-mec-calls-for-urgent-amendment-to-gambling-laws","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng MEC calls for urgent amendment to gambling laws"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Lebogang<\/strong> Maile warned that Gauteng is losing ground to provinces such as Mpumalanga and the Western Cape, which have implemented more effective regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa.- <strong>Gauteng<\/strong> is on the cusp of a gambling reform as authorities are gearing up to revamp the province&#8217;s gambling laws, with plans to introduce sweeping changes that will modernise regulations and tackle emerging challenges in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>July 18 2025<\/strong>, <strong>Lebogang Maile<\/strong>, Gauteng&#8217;s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance and Economic Development, held a meeting with <strong>Gauteng Gambling Board<\/strong>, <strong>State Law Advisor<\/strong>, <strong>GDED Legal Advisory Services<\/strong> and <strong>Cheadle Thompson &amp; Haysom Attorneys<\/strong> to fast-track the process of drafting an amendment to the Gauteng Gambling Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed changes will address critical areas like online gambling, licensing and compliance, player protection, enforcement and penalties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Maile, there is a pressing need for reform as the gambling industry has changed dramatically since the Act was passed. He cited the rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/online-platforms-drive-betting-boom-in-gauteng\">expansion of online gambling<\/a>, which is not adequately addressed by existing regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maile warned that Gauteng is losing ground to provinces such as <strong>Mpumalanga<\/strong> and the <strong>Western Cape<\/strong>, which have implemented more effective regulations to govern the growing gambling industry.
