As Makerere University welcomes a new batch of students in August 2025, the NGLRB is concerned about the potential vulnerability of these freshmen to problem gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Uganda.- The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB)<\/strong> has met with Makerere University’s student guild<\/strong> leadership to discuss plans for protecting students from problem gambling ahead of the new academic year. The student delegation, led by Guild President H.E. Churchill James Ssentamu, visited the NLGRB’s head office, where the meeting took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Makerere University welcomes a new batch of students in August 2025<\/strong>, the NGLRB is concerned about the potential vulnerability of these freshmen to problem gambling and its adverse effects. To mitigate this risk, the regulator is working to implement measures that will shield students from the dangers of irresponsible betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address, Denis Mudene<\/strong>, NlGRB’s CEO, pledged to continue to work closely with the guild leadership to raise awareness about the risks of underage gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ssentanmu thanked the NGLRB for their efforts to protect students from problem gambling and assured the regulator of the guild’s full cooperation in its endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engagement solidifies the partnership between the NLGRB and Makerere University, building on a long-term Memorandum of Understanding<\/a> (MOU) signed in March 2025<\/strong> by former Guild President Emeritus Lubega Vincent Nsamba<\/strong> and Mudene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These student-focused initiatives are a key part of the NLGRB’s responsible gaming program, which aims to prevent gaming-related harm through a comprehensive approach that includes treatment, counselling, public awareness, education and research.<\/p>\n\n\n
