It marks the Authority\u2019s largest financial commitment to the event to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s edition of the iconic 25-kilometre mountain race drew <strong>145 athletes<\/strong> from across the country and beyond. Held in southern Malawi, the race broke records while also highlighting the importance of responsible gambling, a reflection of MAGLA\u2019s commitment and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAGLA\u2019s funding aimed to boost cultural heritage, <strong>give tourism a lift<\/strong> and empower youth through sport as part of its <strong>Corporate Social Responsibility programme<\/strong> focused on more than just the bottom line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While athletes battled for glory, MAGLA\u2019s director of Finance and Administration <strong>Dumbo Muwalo<\/strong> used the platform to deliver a high-impact public message on responsible gambling to the thousands who gathered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMount Mulanje Porter\u2019s Race attracts a lot of people of all ages, so we took this opportunity to highlight the issue of <strong>gambling.<\/strong> This was an opportunity for us that they should be aware that gambling is not for everybody, but those above the age of 18,\u201d said Muwalo, according to the MAGLA website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"598\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/MALAWI-1-900x598.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/MALAWI-1-900x598.jpg 900w, https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/MALAWI-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/MALAWI-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/MALAWI-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Athletes powered through the rugged trails of Mount Mulanje during the Porter\u2019s Race, pushing their limits and chasing victory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Records, prizes, prestige, pride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong field of 100 local men, 25 women and 20 international runners took on Mount Mulanje\u2019s tough terrain, racing for prize money of <strong>K1 million ($600), K600,000 ($360), and K400,000 ($240)<\/strong> awarded to the top finishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking first place in the men\u2019s race was Anthony Matias, with Jafali Jossam coming in second while Frank Kachenja took third position. Matias not only won but also set a <strong>new course record<\/strong> by conquering Mount Mulanje faster than anyone before.
