{"id":4587,"date":"2025-07-03T05:16:35","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T08:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=4587"},"modified":"2026-04-19T15:49:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T18:49:29","slug":"nlc-commits-r10-million-to-aid-eastern-cape-flood-relief-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/nlc-commits-r10-million-to-aid-eastern-cape-flood-relief-efforts","title":{"rendered":"NLC commits R10 million to aid Eastern Cape flood relief efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The funding for the project was approved under the NLC&#8217;s new <strong>Research-Based Funding (RBF)<\/strong> policy, which replaced the Proactive Funding model marred by exploitation and abuse under the previous NLC administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa.- The <strong>National Lotteries Commission (NLC)<\/strong> has pledged <strong>R10-million<\/strong> (\u20ac483,920) to assist communities in the <strong>Eastern Cape<\/strong> following the severe flooding disaster that has destroyed many homes and businesses and led to <strong>more than 100 fatalities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the crisis, the NLC has commissioned the <strong>Small Projects Foundation (SPF)<\/strong> to execute the high-impact relief effort aimed at providing critical assistance to the affected communities, including food, shelter and medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Barney Pityana,<\/strong> NLC chairperson, the commission selected SPF because of its proven track record and <strong>over 36 years<\/strong> of experience in delivering impactful projects in health, education and social development in the Eastern Cape, particularly in the <strong>OR Tambo and Amathole Districts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding for the project was approved under the NLC&#8217;s new <strong>Research-Based Funding (RBF)<\/strong> policy, which replaced the Proactive Funding model <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/siu-seizes-luxury-property-linked-to-lottery-grants\">marred by exploitation and abuse<\/a> under the previous NLC administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RBF framework empowers the NLC to allocate funds to critical projects without a formal application process, ensuring rapid support for communities dealing with crises, emergencies and disasters. The RBF funding is then disbursed to a pre-approved panel of non-profit organisations, enabling the NLC to swiftly respond to disasters without the need for a lengthy tender process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jodi Scholtz<\/strong>, NLC commissioner, said: &#8220;Our interventions include the distribution of food parcels, clean water, clothing, school uniforms and supplies, sanitary pads and essential healthcare support.
