{"id":4341,"date":"2025-06-26T06:59:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T09:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=4341"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:03:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T19:03:03","slug":"rubiks-digital-drives-pan-african-push-to-regulate-esports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/rubiks-digital-drives-pan-african-push-to-regulate-esports","title":{"rendered":"Rubik&#8217;s Digital drives pan-African push to regulate esports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Esports leaders from Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana unite to unlock a youth-driven creative economy fuelled by gaming, tech and storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Botswana.- The future of African esports just gained serious momentum. <strong>Rubik\u2019s Digital CEO Tony Okeyo <\/strong>touched down in Botswana on Tuesday, 24 June, to spearhead a high-level meeting with government and regulatory authorities focused on deepening the adoption of esports in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gathering marked a key step toward formalising the sector and boosting youth participation in digital entertainment, according to BiznaKenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not much was disclosed from the meeting, but it pulled together continental bigwigs, including Tanzania Esports Federation\u2019s <strong>Peter Mshikilwa<\/strong>, Botswana\u2019s Minister of Sport <strong>Jacob Kelebeng<\/strong> and Botswana Gambling Authority CEO <strong>Peter Kesitilwe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion revolved around harnessing the rising popularity of esports to fuel a broader creative economy that integrates art, tech and African storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To end off the week, an esports tournament is set to take place on Saturday, 28 June, with top players walking away with prizes and bragging rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mirror the growth in Kenya<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Botswana is looking to mirror the growth seen in Kenya, where esports is booming. The East African nation raked in $38m in gaming revenue in 2021, placing it fourth in Africa behind <strong>South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Gaming Industry in Africa<\/strong>, Kenya\u2019s esports market alone is projected to hit $8.1m in 2025, with a steady annual growth of 5.2 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuelled by high-speed internet, youth demand and growing infrastructure like gaming caf\u00e9s and tournaments, the continent is becoming a serious player on the global gaming stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubik\u2019s Digital has already begun mobile-first games like Ajua and Kadi, accessible through the Play Store.
