{"id":3930,"date":"2025-06-13T04:16:30","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T07:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=3930"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:20:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T19:20:42","slug":"supersport-may-be-separated-from-dstv-offering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/supersport-may-be-separated-from-dstv-offering","title":{"rendered":"Supersport may be separated from DStv offering"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MultiChoice reconsiders bundling model as consumer demand grows for standalone sports offerings, echoing strategies used by potential new owner Canal+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa.- Sports fans across South Africa may soon get what they\u2019ve long been asking for: the chance to subscribe to <strong>SuperSport<\/strong> without paying for a slew of other channels they don\u2019t watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MultiChoice<\/strong> this week confirmed that it is revisiting the idea of unbundling its flagship SuperSport channels from the traditional DStv bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supersport also runs the <strong>Supersportbet division<\/strong>, an online platform dedicated to <strong>sports betting and casino entertainment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said this move reflects evolving consumer preferences and the growing appetite for more flexible, cost-effective subscription models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis includes considering whether certain bundled elements, such as SuperSport and General Entertainment, could be offered differently in future,\u201d MultiChoice told MyBroadband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the broadcaster emphasised that the idea is still in early exploration, it did admit that it&#8217;s assessing both the commercial viability and potential customer value of the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is also too early to comment on the specifics of any potential model &#8211; including whether changes would be optional or how pricing might be structured,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to delivering flexibility and value to our customers and will share further updates as and when there is meaningful progress to report.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restructuring packages <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t MultiChoice\u2019s first rodeo when it comes to restructuring its packages. Back in 2021, it tested the waters with DStv Flex &#8211; &nbsp;a modular subscription that allowed users to choose between an entertainment core and optional sports \u201cbolt-ons.\u201d Despite initial interest, Flex faded into silence, and by 2024, the company had all but confirmed it was no longer a focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now, with French media giant <strong>Canal+<\/strong>, which already offers standalone sports bundles in Europe, pushing for regulatory <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/canal-clears-crucial-hurdle-in-bid-to-take-over-multichoice\">approval to acquire MultiChoice<\/a>, the winds may be shifting once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+\u2019s \u20ac34.99 monthly sports-only bundle (which includes Apple TV+) could serve as a blueprint, but not everyone is convinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Media commentator <strong>Thinus Ferreira<\/strong> cautioned, \u201cCanal+ won\u2019t strip out sport from the existing package setup since it forms an integral part of the traditional pay-TV bundle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, if Canal+\u2019s acquisition goes through, pending approval from the <strong>Competition Tribunal and Icasa<\/strong>, DStv could be in for a transformation.
