Guinea-Bissau.- In a move that has sent ripples through West African football, Luis Boa Morte has stepped down as head coach of Guinea-Bissau’s national team.

The announcement came on Monday from Football Federation president Carlos Alberto Teixeira, who revealed at a press conference that Boa Morte’s departure was made “in agreement” with the government, according to sports website Footboom.

Teixeira explained that the mutual decision was made in coordination with the country’s government, and the body responsible for bankrolling his coaching stint.

Boa Morte, a former Portugal international and Premier League mainstay, took the reins with bold ambitions to guide Guinea-Bissau to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and even dare for a World Cup berth.

But dreams drawn up in a three-year contract never quite materialised. The AFCON qualification eluded the squad, and frustration simmered under the surface.

Teixeira stated that the failure wasn’t due to a lack of commitment. “It was a streak of misfortune,” he said.

Teixeira also acknowledged the tough road Boa Morte and his team had faced.

While trophies didn’t follow, the coach leaves behind something more enduring, which is a commitment to developing local coaching talent and reshaping Guinea-Bissau’s footballing DNA. That legacy, Teixeira noted, remains a point of pride.

As Boa Morte exits the stage, Guinea-Bissau faces a familiar crossroads, one with fresh questions, fading hopes and a nation still hungry for footballing glory.

Commitment to football
