The declining water levels in Mulunguzi Dam pose a serious threat to the livelihoods of the people of Zomba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority<\/strong> (MAGLA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by donating K5 million (\u20ac2,523) to the Zomba Mountain Fun Walk and Hike<\/strong>, held on Saturday, May 31<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organised by the Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRSM) in partnership with the Friends of Mulunguzi Dam<\/strong> and the Southern Region Water Board<\/strong> to raise funds for the protection of the Mulunguzi Dam<\/strong> and the preservation of the Zomba Mountain ecosystem, which is currently facing severe water shortages and environmental degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the cheque presentation ceremony held on Monday, May 26<\/strong>, Nancy Malata<\/strong>, MAGLA’s Public Relations Officer, reiterated the Authority’s dedication to environmental conservation. She said: “As MAGLA, we believe in supporting initiatives that promote environmental conservation. The declining water levels in Mulunguzi Dam pose a serious threat to the livelihoods of the people of Zomba, and we commend PRSM for taking action, and we saw it fit to partner with them in this meaningful cause.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malata noted that partnerships such as the walk and hike play a critical role in preserving vital natural resources and ensuring sustainable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rachael Kalera Mhango<\/strong>, PRSM Vice President, praised MAGLA for the donation, stating that it would boost their ability to mobilise resources and raise awareness. She said: “We are in an era where environmental conservation is no longer optional–it’s urgent. For us to drive change, we need resources. MAGLA’s sponsorship not only empowers our operations but also strengthens our advocacy efforts as we rally Malawians around this important cause.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants started the 6.6km<\/strong> hike from Gymkhana Club<\/strong> and followed the trail to Mulunguzi Dam<\/strong>, situated atop the Zomba Mountain. The summit also featured a variety of attractions, including food, braai servings, a kids’ area, corporate exhibitions and music from the Millennium Sound Checks<\/strong>, a local live band known for their old-school style.<\/p>\n\n\n
