In an engagement held at GOGO Uganda on October 8, the two organisations, alongside Safe Spaces Uganda, educated boda boda riders on managing their daily earnings, saving consistently and understanding the financial risks associated with gambling.

A clinical psychologist from Safe Spaces Uganda discussed gambling-related risks, including the misconception that a win becomes more likely after a series of losses. The session addressed the danger of continuing to bet in an attempt to recover money already lost.

The NLGRB urged riders who choose to gamble to stake only money they can afford to lose. It cautioned against using funds set aside for rent, fuel, school fees and other essential expenses. The regulator also encouraged participants to set financial limits and prioritise their daily needs before spending money on gambling.

NSSF representatives encouraged riders to save regularly from their daily income, explaining that small, consistent contributions can help them build financial security over time. The fund also stressed that gambling is not a reliable way to accumulate wealth.

The engagement forms part of efforts to improve financial decision-making among boda boda riders, many of whom depend on daily earnings to cover personal expenses and motorcycle operating costs. It also comes amid published research examining sports betting among motorcycle taxi riders in Uganda.

A study published in the Journal of Gambling Studies in 2021 examined 401 male boda boda riders in Mbarara. It found that 18.5 per cent had participated in sports betting during the previous 30 days. Among those who had bet, 21.6 per cent reported doing so daily or almost daily. The study also found associations between sports betting and certain patterns of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking.

Public education on responsible gambling is among the measures the NLGRB uses to address these risks. Similar campaigns have targeted boda boda riders in Kireka, Luzira, Kinawattaka and Portbell.

   See also:

See also: Uganda NLGRB seizes 36 illegal machines in parliament-driven rural crackdown

The NLGRB and NSSF urged motorcycle taxi riders to avoid chasing losses, protect essential income and build savings from daily earnings.

Uganda's National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), in collaboration with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Safe Spaces Uganda, has launched a financial literacy and responsible gambling campaign targeting boda boda riders.
