The Amuru, Amolatar and Dokolo operation is the latest step in an intensified enforcement push after MPs demanded tougher action on unlicensed gaming in rural areas.

Key takeaways:

Uganda.- The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has seized 36 illegal gaming machines in Amuru, Amolatar and Dokolo districts as part of its continuing enforcement campaign against unlicensed gaming.

The Board’s regional team conducted the operation in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force (UPF). It said enforcement activities remain ongoing across the country and appealed to communities to provide information on suspected illegal gaming operations.

Under Uganda’s Lotteries and Gaming Act, gaming operators must obtain the necessary licences before conducting gaming activities. The NLGRB is responsible for licensing and overseeing the sector, including monitoring compliance and taking action against illegal operators.

The latest seizures come as the Board faces pressure to step up enforcement against illegal gaming across the country. In August, Uganda’s Parliament called on the regulator to strengthen enforcement against unlicensed gaming machines, lotteries and online platforms, particularly in rural areas. At the time, the NLGRB told legislators that it had confiscated 9.983 illegal gaming machines over the previous six years and blocked 57 illegal online gaming sites.

Following the parliamentary calls, the regulator intensified its enforcement operations in rural areas. In September, it confiscated 123 illegal gaming machines in the Greater Katonga region during a joint operation with police. The action covered several locations, including Mpigi, Mabuye, Katende, Kalagala and Nakirebe. It also carried out similar operations in the West Nile region in the month.

The regulator has also increased its engagement with local authorities as part of the enforcement push. In September, it held meetings with district and security officials in Jinja and Ibanda to improve coordination on illegal gaming, compliance and enforcement. The Board said its regional teams would continue working with police and relying on information from whistleblowers and community leaders to identify suspected illegal gaming.
