With over 440 million estimated active bettors as of 2025, the continent is no longer a rising star, it’s a global force in the gambling economy.

Once dismissed as a niche market, African sports betting continues to be in the spotlight around the world. A combination of broad internet access, youthful populations, and increasing smartphone adoption has turned betting from a pastime to a norm. As surveyed by GeoPoll, here are the six nations in Africa climbing the leaderboard.

The top six dominators

Nigeria: Here, it is nearly impossible to walk down a street without seeing a betting shop, one publication reported. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, tops the charts with a staggering 168.7 million estimated bettors out of a 237.5 million population. While its 71 per cent participation rate isn’t the highest, its sheer volume dwarfs the rest of the continent.

South Africa: With a population of 64.7 million, it claims a 90 per cent participation rate, translating to 58.3 million bettors. That figure is backed by what analysts call a mature betting environment: strong regulation, mainstream cultural acceptance and tech-savvy users.

Kenya and Uganda: Meanwhile, East Africa is quietly dominating the intensity game. Kenya and Uganda clock in with participation rates of 79 per cent and 87 per cent, respectively, among the highest in the world. In these countries, mobile betting is the fuel behind the fire, with apps and USSD-based platforms reaching even the most remote and low-income areas. Kenya boasts 45.5 million estimated bettors from a population of 57.5 million. Uganda follows closely, with 44.7 million bettors among its 51.4 million citizens. The numbers don’t lie, betting is more than a hobby here: it’s woven into the social fabric.

Tanzania: Further south, in Tanzania, there is a 56 per cent participation rate backed by their young, urban demographic, which is pushing the market’s growth to new heights. With 39.5 million estimated bettors, Tanzania is one to watch.

Ghana: Rounds off the top six with 19.6 million bettors from a population of 35.1 million. Like Tanzania, it’s not just the present that’s exciting, it’s the potential.

Africa’s sports betting sector isn’t just growing, it’s thriving. As mobile innovation, cultural shifts and regulatory clarity continue to reshape the landscape, these six countries are laying the foundation for a multibillion-dollar industry with global reach.

   See also:

See also: SportyTV to air live ELF games in Africa

With over 440 million active bettors and mobile tech fuelling the craze, Africa’s sports betting scene is exploding, and is led by surprising frontrunners.

Africa's sports betting market is experiencing exponential growth, projected to reach 440 million active bettors by 2025, driven by widespread internet access, youthful demographics, and smartphone adoption.
