South Africa.- The National Gambling Board (NGB)<\/strong> has held a responsible gambling awareness session for employees of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS)<\/strong> in Nelspruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme addressed the financial and social consequences that can arise when gambling becomes harmful, including its potential impact on household finances, family relationships and personal wellbeing. Employees were also encouraged to recognise the warning signs associated with problem gambling and seek assistance where necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nelspruit engagement forms part of the NGB\u2019s public education mandate under the National Gambling Act, 2004, which includes raising awareness of responsible and illegal gambling and monitoring its socio-economic impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regulator has expanded this type of outreach in recent years. During the 2024\/25 financial year, it reported conducting 64 community-based public education interventions<\/strong> against a target of 40. The outreach comes as gambling continues to grow in South Africa, with the sector generating R59.3bn (US$3.7bn) in gross gambling revenue in 2023\/24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NGB said workplace engagements like these enable it to reach employees directly with responsible gambling information and promote safer gambling behaviour.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t
