The new operating approach is intended to address weaker returns at selected properties without changing the group’s wider casino growth strategy.

South Africa.- South African gambling and hospitality company Sun International has announced plans to introduce a “Casino Lite” operating model at three underperforming casinos to improve their profitability and returns. The strategy targets Meropa, Windmill and Golden Valley, according to the company’s first-half 2026 results presentation.

Under the Casino Lite model, the three properties will operate under a lower-cost structure designed to improve their financial performance and market positioning. Sun International said the move forms part of its disciplined capital allocation framework, under which it is focusing resources on assets and initiatives that meet its return thresholds while addressing underperformance in non-core operations.

Sun International also disclosed that Section 189A consultations are ongoing in connection with the affected properties. The process relates to potential retrenchments and involves consultation with affected employees before any final decisions are made.

The restructuring comes as Sun International’s wider land-based casino business returns to growth. The division generated R3.4bn (US$211.6m) in income during the first half, up 1.5 per cent from the same period a year earlier, while gross gaming revenue increased by 4.4 per cent.

However, the segment’s gross profit fell 0.7 per cent to R2bn (US$124.5m) despite the increase in gaming revenue. Sun International attributed some of the pressure to customer acquisition bonuses and incentives used to support market-share gains.
