Although Gauteng had more winning tickets, its combined prize value was lower than the Western Cape’s.

The analysis found that eight of the biggest Division One jackpots across PowerBall, Lotto, and Lotto Plus 1 were purchased in the Western Cape. These findings were reported by The Citizen on 7 September 2026, and were based on a PlayCasino.com review of the largest archived Division One jackpots across PowerBall, PowerBall XTRA, Lotto and Lotto Plus 1.

The Western Cape’s position at the top of the ranking reflects the value of several major jackpots won in the province. The report stressed that lottery odds remain the same across the country, meaning the province’s leading position reflects its record of major wins rather than any difference in the chances of individual tickets.

The Western Cape’s total was boosted by some of South Africa’s biggest lottery prizes, including the R232.1m (US$14.5m) PowerBall jackpot won in Tygerdal, Cape Town. Other major wins were recorded in Mossel Bay, Durbanville, Ottery and Mitchells Plain.

North West had one winning ticket worth R158m (US$9.9m), with Mpumalanga next at R145.5m (US$9.1m). The Eastern Cape’s two wins totalled R121.9m (US$7.6m), while Northern Cape and Limpopo recorded R65.2m (US$4.1m) and R39.5m (US$2.5m) respectively. These figures reflect disclosed record-level jackpots only, not the full range of lottery prizes paid in each province.

   See also:

See also: North West Gambling Board achieves clean audit for second consecutive year

Eight of the biggest disclosed lottery jackpots bought in the province were worth a combined R817.4m (US$51.2m).

South Africa's Western Cape province has recorded the highest combined value of disclosed record lottery wins, totaling R817.4m (US$51.2m) from eight tickets, surpassing Gauteng despite having fewer winning tickets.
