South Africa.- Lungile Dukwana, acting CEO of the National Gambling Board (NGB), has been honoured with the Eagle for Industry Accountability and Collaboration Award at the 2026 African Lotteries and Gaming Association (ALGA) CEOs Forum in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to the NGB, the award recognises Dukwana’s contribution to regulatory cooperation and engagement with gambling industry stakeholders.

Dukwana has led the Board since July 2025, after being seconded from the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), where he was executive for strategy. He holds an MBA and has more than 28 years of public-sector experience.

During his tenure, the NGB has introduced measures covering operator verification, online gambling infrastructure and responsible gambling. In April 2026, it launched a verified gambling operators web portal giving the public access to a consolidated list of licensed operators.

The NGB has also partnered with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to raise awareness of gambling risks among students and protect funds intended for education and living expenses.

The regulator has simultaneously increased enforcement against unlawful gambling. Between April 1, 2025 and April 10, 2026, High Court orders resulted in approximately R3.075m (US$192,301) being forfeited to the state as proceeds linked to unlawful gambling activities. Dukwana said the action demonstrated the consequences of operating or participating in gambling outside the regulated market.

The recognition came during ALGA’s four-day CEOs Forum, which runs from September 1-4 under the theme “The Black Table – Leading Africa with Intention.” The event has brought together regulators, operators, government representatives and industry executives from across the continent.

ALGA said the 2026 forum has attracted participants from more than 23 countries and 24 regulators. Its agenda includes regulatory harmonisation, action against illegal gambling, responsible gambling, technological development and sustainable growth of Africa’s lotteries and gaming sectors.
