{"id":3198,"date":"2025-05-22T10:27:37","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T13:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=3198"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:49:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T19:49:40","slug":"kenya-to-unveil-new-guidelines-for-gambling-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/kenya-to-unveil-new-guidelines-for-gambling-sector","title":{"rendered":"Kenya to unveil new guidelines for gambling sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Gamblers will need to meet a threshold before they can participate in betting activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya.- The Kenyan government is working on implementing new regulations for the gambling industry, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/kenya-suspends-all-gambling-ads-for-30-days\">30-day ban on gambling advertisements<\/a> nears its end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Betting Control and Licensing Board<\/strong> <strong>(BCLB)<\/strong> has delegated this responsibility to the multi-agency team it recently established to assess and strengthen the operational guidelines of betting and gaming operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multi-agency team comprises representatives from various government agencies, including the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Office of the Attorney General, Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya Film Classification Board, Media Council of Kenya (MCK), and Financial Reporting Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement made on <strong>Friday, May 16<\/strong>,\u00a0during a community event, BLCB chairperson, Dr <strong>Jane Makau<\/strong>, noted that the new guidelines will focus on controlling betting, limiting access, and preventing underage gambling.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Makau said: &#8220;We all understand that betting is addictive. We must unite and sanitise this country by reviewing the guidelines. The team we have already put in place will review what is being consumed by the public and ensure that all the operators adhere to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new guidelines will also address gambling near schools and exposure to children, introduce rules on betting times, and establish a threshold for gamblers to meet before engaging in betting activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Sasa Krneta<\/strong>, the chairperson of the <strong>Association of Gambling Operators of Kenya (AGOK), <\/strong>gaming operators in the country are open to stricter measures that protect players and encourage responsible gambling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;We promote responsible gambling and all we want is to ensure that Kenyans only bet on that which they can afford to lose.
