South Africa.- A compliance operation led by women in law enforcement and regulatory agencies has uncovered two illegal gambling operations in Vryburg, North West Province.

The inspections, which were conducted in outlets across the Naledi Local Municipality on Friday, August 21, as part of Women’s Month activities, brought together officials from several provincial and local agencies to check compliance with gambling, liquor and other applicable laws.

The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) participated in the operation alongside the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality and Naledi Local Municipality traffic officers.

NWGB inspectors found two internet cafés operating illegal gambling activities. One premises had 44 computers, while the second had 50 computers and 43 illegal gambling machines. Both operators were fined R2,500 each.

Officials also inspected liquor and grocery outlets, where they engaged business owners on their legal obligations and the potential consequences of operating without the required licences or permits.

The NWGB reminded the public to use only licensed gambling premises. It said gambling at unlicensed operations is unlawful and does not provide gamblers with the same legal protections available at licensed establishments.

The Board urged people to report suspected illegal gambling operations through its hotline, WhatsApp number or email address.
