{"id":2892,"date":"2025-05-15T05:34:25","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T08:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=2892"},"modified":"2026-04-19T16:59:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T19:59:50","slug":"sanac-turns-to-national-lottery-for-hiv-funding-lifeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/sanac-turns-to-national-lottery-for-hiv-funding-lifeline","title":{"rendered":"SANAC turns to National Lottery for HIV funding lifeline\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Around 17 per cent of South Africa&#8217;s HIV budget comes from PEPFAR, the US initiative for AIDs relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa.- Following the loss of US funding, the <strong>South African National AIDS Council<\/strong> (SANAC) is seeking support from the <strong>National Lotteries Commission <\/strong>(NLC) to help sustain HIV\/AIDS initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Deputy President <strong>Paul Mashatile<\/strong>, the government is considering multiple solutions, including additional budget allocations, to address the funding shortfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mashatile said that although life-saving medications remained available, the funding shortfall could lead to job losses in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around <strong>17 per cent<\/strong> of South Africa&#8217;s HIV budget comes from <strong>PEPFAR<\/strong>, the US initiative for AIDs relief. In monetary terms, that&#8217;s about <strong>R8 billion<\/strong> (\u20ac391.6m) in funding over the past <strong>12 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mashatile noted that the government is still searching for a solution to bridge the funding gap, with SANAC&#8217;s help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He disclosed that the national lottery has tendered a funding proposal, which SANAC&#8217;s discretionary funding unit is currently considering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the government is reaching out to other countries to negotiate low-cost medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister of Science and Technology has also set up a working group to assess the impact of the funding withdrawal on key research and development projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) regulates the lottery and channels <strong>47 per cent<\/strong> of its annual budget to support various charitable initiatives.
