{"id":28547,"date":"2026-07-09T07:19:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T10:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=28547"},"modified":"2026-07-13T02:30:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T05:30:04","slug":"kenya-proposes-14-day-deadline-for-gambling-payouts-with-5-penalty-for-late-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/kenya-proposes-14-day-deadline-for-gambling-payouts-with-5-penalty-for-late-payments","title":{"rendered":"Kenya proposes 14-day deadline for gambling payouts with 5% penalty for late payments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The draft regulations would require licensed gambling operators to pay player winnings within&nbsp;14 days&nbsp;or face a 5 per cent penalty, daily interest on unpaid payouts and possible&nbsp;licence&nbsp;suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya.- Kenya has proposed stricter player protection measures that would require licensed gambling operators to pay <strong>player winnings<\/strong> within 14 days or face financial penalties and possible licence suspension under the draft Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026, proposed under the Gambling Control Act, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under <strong>Regulation 104<\/strong> of the draft Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026, &#8220;any Licensee who fails to pay the winnings to a player within 14 days&#8221; would be liable to a penalty of 5 per cent of the total winnings payable to the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the penalty, players would be entitled to receive the outstanding winnings plus interest of 5 per cent per day from the expiry of the 14-day payment period for up to 21 days, or until the winnings are paid in full. The draft regulations further provide that continued <strong>non-compliance<\/strong> with the payment requirements could result in the suspension of an operator&#8217;s licence.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2026\/07\/KENYA-14DAYS-JC-900x359.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2026\/07\/KENYA-14DAYS-JC-900x359.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2026\/07\/KENYA-14DAYS-JC.jpeg 1105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kenya&#8217;s draft regulations would require gambling operators to pay player winnings within 14 days or face penalties and possible licence suspension.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The proposed measures have also been highlighted by the <strong>Fintech Association of Kenya<\/strong>, which said in a recent LinkedIn post that Kenya&#8217;s proposed gambling regulations &#8220;would penalise operators that fail to pay winners within 14 days, as the government tightens financial, technical and consumer safeguards under the Gambling Control Act, 2025.&#8221; The association noted that the <strong>wider regulatory package<\/strong> would also strengthen licensing, compliance, anti-money laundering and consumer protection measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the proposed payout rules, the draft regulations would also provide the GRA with powers to <strong>license, inspect, audit, suspend and revoke<\/strong> gambling operators, while requiring firms to comply with stricter licensing, anti-money laundering and technical standards.
