The R139m (US$8.5m) prize rolled down after three consecutive rollovers, marking the first PowerBall Xtra jackpot cascade in South African National Lottery history.

South Africa.- South Africa’s National Lottery has recorded its first PowerBall Xtra jackpot cascade, with an estimated R139m (US$8.6m) jackpot rolling down to Division Two and creating three winners of R45,733,457.30 (US$2.8m) each.

The cascade was triggered after no player matched all five numbers plus the PowerBall in the June 30, 2026 PowerBall Xtra draw. Under the rules introduced by new National Lottery operator Sizekhaya, if the jackpot is not won after three consecutive rollovers, it automatically cascades to the next winning division.

The mechanism, introduced when Sizekhaya took over operation of South Africa’s National Lottery on June 1, resulted in three ticket holders each receiving R45,733,457.30 (US$2.8m) from the estimated R139m (US$8.5m) jackpot.

One winning ticket was purchased at a Checkers Hyper supermarket in New Market, Alberton, while the other two were bought via the Standard Bank and FNB mobile banking apps.

Fundi Sithebe, Sizekhaya’s chief operating officer, said: “This is a landmark moment for the National Lottery and a wonderful day for three South Africans whose lives have changed forever.”

Sithebe said the feature was designed to create guaranteed winners in the final PowerBall Xtra draw of each month. “When we introduced the jackpot cascade, our goal was to ensure that the last PowerBall Xtra draw of every month creates significant winners. Last night, South Africans saw that promise become reality. Instead of another rollover, the jackpot found three homes.”

Sizekhaya said the draw marked the first time in South African National Lottery history that a PowerBall Xtra jackpot had cascaded to the next winning division, creating multiple multimillionaires from a single draw.

The draw also produced winners across other prize categories, with players in Division Three of the main PowerBall draw each receiving R32,682.40 (US$2,000).
