South Africa.- The National Gambling Board (NGB) of South Africa says it completed 33 community outreach programmes across five provinces during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, as it prepares to expand responsible gambling and consumer protection initiatives in the second quarter.

The regulator said its next phase of outreach will focus on responsible gambling education in peri-urban, rural and township communities, alongside campaigns on illegal gambling, illegal online gambling, financial literacy, youth engagement and higher education.

These plans follow several awareness campaigns the NGB ran during the first quarter in partnership with provincial regulators and government institutions. One saw the board work with the Limpopo Gambling Board to engage residents in Polokwane and the wider Capricorn District. The week-long programme included face-to-face sessions on responsible gambling to help community members understand gambling risks and make informed betting decisions.

The NGB also visited the Department of Correctional Services’ Zonderwater Training College, where it delivered responsible gambling awareness sessions to warden trainees. Similar presentations were later held for a new intake of departmental interns, with discussions also covering financial literacy.

Young people remained a key focus of the regulator’s outreach efforts during the quarter. Through its Youth Financial Literacy Programme in Pretoria, the NGB provided participants with practical money management skills while promoting responsible gambling messages.

Elsewhere, officials met residents in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, to discuss the risks associated with problem gambling and the importance of protecting both financial and mental wellbeing.

The board also took part in discussions on emerging research into gambling behaviour among young people and university students, an area it has identified as one of its priorities for the current quarter.

According to the NGB, these programmes form part of its wider efforts to strengthen responsible gambling awareness and consumer protection, with additional outreach planned across South Africa during Quarter 2.
