{"id":2721,"date":"2025-05-13T04:50:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T07:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=2721"},"modified":"2026-04-19T17:04:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:04:43","slug":"uganda-cracks-down-on-illegal-gambling-seizing-more-than-5000-slot-machines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/uganda-cracks-down-on-illegal-gambling-seizing-more-than-5000-slot-machines","title":{"rendered":"Uganda cracks down on illegal gambling, seizing more than 5,000 slot machines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The NLGRB steps up its war on illicit gaming as thousands of slot machines are confiscated and to be destroyed across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Uganda.- In a sweeping crackdown on illegal gambling, <strong>Uganda&#8217;s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB)<\/strong> has confiscated more than 5,000 unauthorised <strong>slot machines<\/strong>, sending a powerful message to unlicensed operators and reinforcing its mission to protect citizens from the growing risks of unregulated gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is part of a larger, aggressive campaign by the NLGRB to rid the country of <strong>illicit gambling<\/strong> dens, particularly in rural areas where coin slot machines have become accessible, even to minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are here to supervise and regulate all gaming activities, but more importantly, to protect Ugandans from the harmful effects of gambling,\u201d NLGRB CEO <strong>Denis Ngabirano<\/strong> told the Nile Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce we license someone, we publish their details so the public can verify. We also act on tips from licensed operators when illegal setups appear near them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specialised teams sent in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 67 of<strong> Uganda&#8217;s Lotteries and Gaming Act, Cap 334<\/strong>, grants the Board authority to clamp down hard on unlawful operations. Offenders face hefty fines, jail time, or both &#8211; if caught running unlicensed gambling setups or allowing underage access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enforce the law, the board has rolled out a specialised <strong>Enforcement and Investigations Unit<\/strong>, backed by a national Inspection and Compliance team.
