Kenya.- Online betting platforms recorded the highest rate of suspected digital fraud among all sectors in Kenya in 2025, with 15.6 per cent of attempted transactions flagged as potentially fraudulent, according to a report by TransUnion. The sector also recorded a 97 per cent year-on-year increase in suspected fraud attempts, the largest rise among all industries analysed.

TransUnion found that fraud activity is increasingly concentrated during account creation. In Kenya, 4.5 per cent of new account registrations were flagged as suspected fraud, compared with 2.2 per cent of account logins and 0.9 per cent of financial transactions, suggesting that fraudsters are focusing on creating or manipulating digital identities before attempting to access accounts or move funds.

Among consumers surveyed, account takeover attacks accounted for 27 per cent of reported fraud cases, while identity theft represented 26 per cent. Phishing attacks and social engineering scams accounted for 24 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, highlighting the range of methods used to target users of digital platforms.

Across other sectors, video gaming recorded a suspected fraud rate of 9.1 per cent, followed by government services at 6.3 per cent and insurance at 5.7 per cent.

Kenya’s overall suspected digital fraud rate was 2.3 per cent in 2025, below the global average of 3.8 per cent. However, consumers who fell victim to scams reported the highest median financial loss among African countries surveyed, at KSh108,132 (US$838).
