The Betting Levy Act No. 27 of 2025, which came into force on January 1, 2026, introduced a 5 per cent levy on deposits made into customer gaming accounts and a further 5 per cent levy on withdrawals.

Gaming and betting operators are also subject to a 10 per cent excise duty on betting stakes introduced under the Customs and Excise (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2025. In 2025, operators including BetPawa and Betway challenged it in court, arguing it would have a significant financial impact on their businesses.
