Retail sales also increased 4.3 per cent to R41.1bn (US$2.49bn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief executive <strong>Mark Blair<\/strong> said discretionary retail spending has yet to benefit significantly from improving economic conditions, including lower inflation, interest rate cuts and a gradual recovery in household disposable income. Blair said consumers are facing growing competition for their spending, with online betting emerging as one of the factors diverting money away from purchases such as clothing, footwear and homeware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Price is not the first major consumer-facing business to highlight the issue.
