South Africa.- A multi-agency compliance operation in Mahikeng has led to the seizure of illegal gambling machines from tuckshops as authorities intensify enforcement of provincial gambling laws in North West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation, led by the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) consumer and liquor inspectors, was carried out with the North West Gambling Board (NWGB)<\/strong>, Home Affairs immigration officials and the South African Police Service (SAPS)<\/strong> as part of preparations for the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, Thuntsha Lerole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the inspection, officials visited seven tuckshops in 15 and Extension 39, Mahikeng Local Municipality, of which six were found compliant with consumer protection regulations. However, gambling enforcement officers seized three illegal gambling machines found at non-compliant premises and issued an R1,500 (\u20ac79) fine in terms of applicable regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Authorities said the machines were being operated without authorisation, in breach of provincial gambling laws. The action forms part of ongoing efforts to curb unlicensed gambling activity in small retail outlets across the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the gambling-related enforcement, SAPS seized illicit cigarettes, while immigration officials detained three undocumented foreign nationals operating businesses in the area. Officials also noted that all inspected liquor outlets were compliant with licensing requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation highlights continued regulatory pressure on unlicensed gambling activity, particularly in township retail environments where authorities have repeatedly warned against the operation of unlicensed gaming machines.<\/p>\n\n\n
