The Lotteries and Gaming Board used the country’s premier trade show to shift the gambling mindset from risky business to responsible entertainment.

Zimbabwe.- In a bold move to reshape the gaming narrative, the Zimbabwe Lotteries and Gaming Board seized the spotlight at the 65th Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) to make a powerful case for responsible gambling. This in a nation where betting often walks a fine line between pastime and pitfall.

Set against the fair’s theme, “Industrialisation: Crafting an Integrated Economic Landscape,” the board’s message stood out as both timely and transformative. While industries gathered to drive growth, the gaming regulator focused on a different kind of investment – financial and social responsibility within the gambling sector.

“The lotteries and gaming board requires all those that patronise us to ensure that they exercise restraint,” said Dr Misheck Chingozha, Interim Secretary of the Board.

“Their passion should not override their reasoning to the extent that they shouldn’t know when to stop or walk away. All those that do it, should do it for fun. We encourage our punters to not go into any betting house with an amount they cannot afford to lose.”

According to This Day, Dr Chingozha said gambling was entertainment and not a survival strategy or side hustle.

But the message wasn’t just for punters. The board spotlighted gaming’s lesser-known contribution to nation-building. Beyond the betting slips and jackpots lies a revenue stream that channels licensing fees and regulated payments into public coffers.

From healthcare to education and social welfare, these funds are helping Zimbabwe stitch together a safety net. Still, Dr Chingozha cautioned that none of this was sustainable without a balanced ecosystem. Responsible gambling, he said, is more than a slogan, it’s the bedrock of a healthy industry that protects individuals while fuelling development.

By planting the seeds of moderation and responsibility at ZITF, the board made its point clear: in Zimbabwe, the future of gaming isn’t just about the next big win. It’s about playing smart and staying safe – for punters and the nation alike.

A revenue stream for nation-building
