{"id":24704,"date":"2026-05-12T06:16:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T09:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=24704"},"modified":"2026-05-13T07:03:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T10:03:17","slug":"national-gambling-board-warns-of-fake-inspectors-targeting-operators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/national-gambling-board-warns-of-fake-inspectors-targeting-operators","title":{"rendered":"National Gambling Board warns of fake inspectors targeting operators"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The regulator said only inspectors formally appointed under the National Gambling Act are permitted to perform inspection and enforcement duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa.- The <strong>National Gambling Board<\/strong> has warned gambling operators and members of the public about people posing as board officials to carry out unlawful activities in parts of South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement issued on May 8, the regulator said it had received reports of <strong>people falsely presenting themselves as NGB inspectors<\/strong> or authorised representatives while visiting gambling venues in North West Province and Centurion, Gauteng. According to the board, the suspects allegedly demanded money from operators while claiming to be conducting inspections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulator said only inspectors formally appointed under the National Gambling Act are permitted to perform inspection and enforcement duties. It added that official inspections must also involve provincial inspectors and, where necessary, members of the South African Police Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board cited provisions of the National Gambling Act that make it an offence for anyone to falsely claim to be an inspector, a regulatory authority or a person acting on behalf of a regulator. Under the legislation, individuals convicted of such offences may face fines of up to R10m (\u20ac517,000), imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NGB advised provincial licensing authorities, licensed operators, suppliers and members of the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the regulator before sharing information or making payments. The board noted that official identification should always be requested and verified directly through its office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also cautioned operators against disclosing banking information or making payments through unofficial channels.
