South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC)<\/strong> has held an education and awareness workshop in South Africa\u2019s North West Province<\/strong> aimed at improving how civil society organisations engage with lottery funding and regulatory processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session took place at the Protea Hotel Mafikeng <\/strong>within the Mahikeng Local Municipality. It forms part of the NLC\u2019s broader outreach programme to clarify its mandate and strengthen compliance within the gambling and lottery-funded development sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the NLC, the workshop focused on explaining its regulatory responsibilities, particularly how funds generated through the national lottery are distributed to support community projects. South Africa\u2019s lottery system operates under the National Lotteries Act, which requires proceeds to be allocated to sectors such as charities, sports, arts and culture. The regulator is also responsible for ensuring transparency and preventing the misuse of funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants were guided through the funding application process, including eligibility criteria, documentation requirements and common reasons applications are rejected. This practical component is designed to reduce application errors and improve the quality of submissions from non-profit and community-based organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative follows a report by the NLC<\/a> indicating that stricter compliance checks, coupled with a rise in incomplete applications, are slowing the allocation of lottery funding. Data from the latest application cycle show that thousands of organisations failed to meet basic registration and reporting requirements, leaving them ineligible for support.
