Dodoma seminar outlines regulatory mandate, revenue contribution and responsible gambling measures in Tanzania.

Tanzania.- Tanzania has reaffirmed its focus on strengthening oversight of the gaming sector to ensure compliance with the law and protect public interests. The message was delivered during a seminar organised by the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) and attended by the Dodoma Regional Security Committee.

Held on April 23 at the Regional Commissioner’s Office, the seminar included a presentation outlining the regulator’s mandate. Director of Corporate Services Daniel Ole Sumayan said that GBT is responsible for “coordinating and regulating gaming activities, including licensing, operator inspections and ensuring compliance with integrity and legal requirements“, as well as advising the government on revenue collection.

Director General James Mbalwe said the sector continues to contribute significantly to Tanzania’s economy, noting that approximately TZS260bn (€90m) was collected in gaming taxes in 2025.

Dodoma Regional Administrative Secretary Khatibu Kazungu stated that the gaming sector is a source of government revenue, underscoring the need for close supervision to ensure compliance with national laws, including the minimum participation age of 18 years.

The session also addressed responsible gambling, with Dodoma District Commissioner Jabir Shekimweri emphasising the importance of public education to tackle gambling addiction, stating that gaming should be regarded as entertainment rather than a source of employment or income.
