The discussions reflect increasing regulatory attention on online betting platforms operating in Uganda.

Uganda.- The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) of Uganda has initiated discussions with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to strengthen collaboration on regulating online gambling and gaming-related advertising.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, April 29, brought together officials from both agencies to examine concerns around illegal online gambling operations and the monitoring of gambling advertisements distributed through digital and broadcast platforms.

NLGRB chief executive officer Denis Mudene Ngabirano said the regulator is seeking stronger coordination with communications authorities as online gambling activity expands in Uganda. He said the board’s role includes ensuring that gambling advertisements are accurate, responsibly presented and do not mislead consumers.

The UCC was represented by Dr Abudu Sallam Waiswa, the commission’s head of litigation, prosecution and legal advisory, who noted that cooperation between state agencies is necessary to protect the public and strengthen enforcement efforts linked to unlawful online gambling activity.

The discussions reflect increasing regulatory attention on online betting platforms operating in Uganda, particularly those that function without licences or fail to comply with advertising standards. Uganda’s gaming sector is regulated under the Lotteries and Gaming Act, which gives the NLGRB authority to supervise lotteries, betting, casinos and gaming activities across the country. The law also mandates the regulator to protect the public from harmful effects linked to gambling activities.

While neither agency announced specific enforcement actions following the meeting, the engagement signals possible future coordination on monitoring digital gambling content, identifying illegal operators and enforcing advertising standards within Uganda’s regulated gaming market.

The NLGRB has stepped up enforcement against illegal gambling operations in recent weeks, confiscating hundreds of unauthorised gaming machines and detaining several operators for breaching licensing and compliance requirements.

The board has also increased collaboration with relevant government bodies to support coordinated crackdowns and ensure stricter compliance across the sector. Last month, the regulator held talks with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on tax obligations, NCEMS and other sector priorities.
