This trend is being observed alongside increased competition from mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), which are putting pressure on pricing in the prepaid market.

According to the group’s latest integrated report and industry analysis, prepaid services account for more than half of MTN South Africa’s service revenue. However, this segment has come under strain due to changing consumer spending behaviour and broader economic pressures. The company reported that service revenue in South Africa has slowed to about 2 per cent, driven by weaker prepaid performance, while postpaid and enterprise segments remained stable.

MTN further noted that gambling expenditure has increased significantly in South Africa in recent years, with national betting revenue estimated at tens of billions of rand annually. Industry data referenced in related reporting indicates that gambling has become a more regular part of consumer spending patterns, particularly among lower-income mobile users who traditionally rely on prepaid services for communication and data access.

The company also highlighted that MVNO operators continue to attract users through aggressive pricing strategies, further intensifying competition in the prepaid market. This has made revenue streams less predictable and increased pressure on average revenue per user.

MTN executives said the company is reviewing its prepaid strategy, including adjustments to products, pricing and distribution channels, to stabilise usage and retain customers. However, management cautioned that recovery in the segment may take several quarters as behavioural and market pressures persist.

   See also:

See also: South African Reserve Bank corrects gambling spending interpretation amid online betting surge

The operator said a growing share of consumer disposable income is being diverted towards online betting and gambling platforms.

MTN Group reports that a growing share of consumer disposable income in South Africa is being diverted towards online betting and gambling platforms, negatively impacting its prepaid mobile segment's revenue.
