Botswana.- The Board of Botswana’s Gambling Authority has reportedly recommended Moruntshi Kemorwale for appointment as the regulator’s next Chief Executive Officer. According to sources familiar with the process, his name has been forwarded to the Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship for final approval, in line with procedures governing state regulatory agencies.

The move follows an internal recruitment and assessment process conducted by the Board to identify a candidate with experience in gambling regulation, governance oversight and institutional management.

Kemorwale is currently serving as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Gambling Authority. Before assuming the interim role in August 2025, he held senior positions within the regulator, including Director of Responsible Gambling and Corporate Affairs and Chief of Staff. He was responsible for managing public affairs, responsible gambling programmes and engagement with stakeholders.

He joined the regulator during its early operational years and has more than two decades of experience across public affairs, communications and administration roles in sectors including mining, media and law enforcement. According to the Authority’s executive profiles, he holds a Master of Business Administration and a postgraduate diploma in management.

Industry sources said the Board considered candidates’ experience in compliance management, operational leadership and regulatory administration during the selection process. Kemorwale’s background within the Authority is understood to have weighed heavily in the Board’s recommendation.

The Gambling Authority is responsible for licensing, monitoring and regulating Botswana’s gambling sector. The regulator has faced growing pressure in recent years to strengthen oversight as the sector expands and adopts new digital gambling technologies.

Kemorwale has publicly advocated for stronger regulatory controls and responsible gambling measures in Botswana’s gaming industry. In past speeches, he has also positioned the sector as a key driver of economic growth, job creation and government revenue. At an event earlier this year, he stated that regulatory integrity and enforcement were necessary to maintain public trust and support sustainable industry growth.

If approved by the Minister, Kemorwale will take over the role permanently, representing a vote of confidence in internal succession and continuity within the regulatory framework.
