Tanzania.- The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) has supported a tree-planting initiative in central Dodoma, contributing 10.4m Tanzanian shillings (€3,700) to plant 1,000 trees in the Njedengwa–Chiwangwa area.

The exercise was organised by Habari Conservation Organisation and forms part of broader environmental efforts linked to community development and climate response. GBT Director General James B. Mbalwe participated in the activity, joining residents and organisers on-site.

Speaking at the event, Dodoma deputy mayor Bakari Fundikila said cooperation between public institutions and community groups remains essential to sustaining environmental programmes. The initiative aligns with local government priorities on reforestation and land restoration in semi-arid regions of the capital.

GBT, which regulates gambling activities in Tanzania, has in recent years incorporated social responsibility programmes into its operations. These include public awareness campaigns and community-based projects funded through industry proceeds.

The regulator’s involvement reflects a wider trend in the gambling sector, where authorities and licensed operators are mandated to demonstrate measurable social impact beyond revenue collection. Environmental initiatives, particularly those addressing climate risks such as deforestation and land degradation, are becoming part of that response.

Organisers confirmed that the 1,000 trees planted will be monitored to ensure their survival, with community members expected to take part in maintenance. Similar projects in Dodoma have faced challenges related to water availability and long-term care, making follow-up a critical component.

GBT stated that the programme will continue under its sustainability agenda, although no timeline for additional phases was disclosed.
