Gaming Board advances electronic monitoring to improve compliance and long-term sector confidence.

Tanzania.- The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) has reaffirmed its suspension on new slot machine and route operation licences, keeping new applicants temporarily out of the market as authorities advance stronger compliance controls through a national Electronic Monitoring System (EMS).

In an official notice dated April 10 2026, GBT said the temporary halt remains in place for new applicants seeking slot machine and route operation licences, citing “growing regulatory challenges” and the need to finalise the Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) framework for the segment.

The move is set to support stronger long-term sustainability in Tanzania’s land-based gaming sector, particularly in route operations involving slot machine placements outside traditional casino environments, by improving oversight, revenue reporting, taxation compliance and anti-fraud controls through real-time monitoring.

While the April 2026 notice may appear to signal a new policy shift, the suspension was first introduced in February 2023, making the latest publication a formal reaffirmation that the freeze remains in force rather than a fresh regulatory intervention.

Gambling sector strengthened

Existing licensed operators were not specifically identified as being affected, with the restriction focused on new market entrants applying for slot machine and route operation licences.

The decision reflects Tanzania’s broader efforts to formalise and strengthen its gambling sector, where authorities have increasingly prioritised licensing discipline, stronger compliance standards and improved investor confidence as gaming continues to contribute to national revenue and employment.

The continued freeze may also strengthen coordinated industry engagement through bodies such as the Tanzania Gaming Association (TGA), which represents licensed operators in the regulated market.

As part of this wider regulatory shift, Tanzania has also raised its profile in African gaming policy discussions, with GBT participating in regional events such as SiGMA Africa 2026 and promoting stronger cross-border cooperation, innovation and sustainable development across regulated gaming markets.

For operators and investors, the temporary licence freeze may slow short-term expansion in the slot machine segment, but it could also support stronger long-term market confidence by improving transparency, accountability and regulatory certainty.

<div
