South Africa.- Sun International has opened applications for its 2026 Gaming Operations Learnership<\/strong> at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World amid the country\u2019s 31.4 per cent unemployment rate, as land-based casino operations remain a significant source of formal employment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Statistics South Africa\u2019s Quarterly Labour Force Survey for Q4 2025, released in February 2026, approximately 7.8 million people were officially unemployed<\/strong>, while around 17.1 million people were employed. South Africa\u2019s official unemployment rate stood at 31.4 per cent in Q4 2025, while the broader expanded unemployment rate, which includes discouraged work-seekers, remained significantly higher at 42.1 per cent, highlighting the importance of accredited learnerships that create pathways into formal employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GrandWest programme<\/strong>, listed on Sun International\u2019s official careers portal under reference SI-816, offers 15 positions on a \u201c12-month employment contract and leads to a National Certificate in Gaming Operations (Level 3)<\/strong>\u201d. Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old, currently unemployed, have Grade 12, no criminal record and meet the requirements for a gaming licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The learnership focuses specifically on casino table games<\/strong> and frontline gaming operations rather than general hospitality roles. Sun International states that dealers are responsible for facilitating the play of casino table games and providing gaming services in line with company standards, operational procedures and compliance requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, weekends and public holidays and work in a smoking environment. The gaming licence requirement further underlines the highly regulated nature of South Africa\u2019s casino industry, where frontline staff must meet strict compliance standards<\/strong> before entering live gaming operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casino jobs expansion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond direct casino operations, programmes like this support wider employment <\/strong>across the gambling ecosystem, including dealers, cashiers, surveillance teams, compliance staff, hospitality workers and customer service personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 intake forms part of a broader workforce development drive across Sun International\u2019s casino portfolio. Similar Gaming Operations Learnerships have also been advertised for properties including Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom and Carnival City Casino, suggesting a group-wide commitment to strengthening operational staffing across its land-based casino network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes as Sun International\u2019s digital division, SunBet, continues to grow its contribution to group earnings. While investor attention<\/strong> increasingly focuses on online betting and gaming, the learnership programme shows the operator continues to invest in retail casino infrastructure and specialist talent development.<\/p>\n\n\n
