Investigations show that several key suspects entered the country after fleeing Cambodia.

Eswatini.- Eswatini authorities have traced the movement of foreign nationals accused of operating an illegal online gambling and fraud network to Southeast Asia, where they are believed to have previously operated.

The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) said investigations show that several key suspects entered the country after fleeing Cambodia, where they were reportedly wanted for similar crimes. National Commissioner Vusi Manoma Masango confirmed that the suspects have been under scrutiny since arrests began on March 10.

According to police findings, the group initially relocated from Cambodia to South Africa before moving onward to Mozambique. Authorities believe they attempted to establish an operational base in Mozambique but were intercepted, prompting their eventual relocation to Eswatini.

The suspects are alleged to be part of a broader transnational syndicate involved in illegal online gambling platforms and cyber-enabled fraud schemes. Law enforcement officials say such operations often rely on cross-border movement to evade detection and continue activities in jurisdictions with weaker regulatory enforcement.

Cambodia has in recent years intensified action against illicit online gambling and fraud networks, particularly those linked to so-called “pig butchering” scams, schemes that combine investment fraud with digital manipulation. The crackdowns have forced some illegal operators to relocate, contributing to the expansion of similar activities into other regions, including parts of Africa.

In Eswatini, the case has raised concerns about regulatory gaps within the gambling sector and the potential misuse of digital platforms. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the syndicate’s operations, including the scale of financial transactions and the number of affected victims.

Police also signalled plans to strengthen cooperation with regional and international agencies to track cross-border criminal networks linked to online betting and fraud.

Further updates are expected as prosecutions proceed and enforcement agencies assess measures to prevent similar operations from taking root in the country.
