The aim is to prevent underage gambling and restrict access to unauthorised users, while improving compliance across online operators.

Support mechanisms are also being reinforced through programmes run by the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF). These include self-exclusion tools that allow individuals to block access to gambling platforms, as well as counselling services for those experiencing harm.

The discussion also underscored the need for increased public awareness and coordinated efforts among stakeholders. Regulators, operators and advocacy groups are encouraged to strengthen education initiatives that highlight the risks associated with gambling and promote responsible behaviour.

As the sector continues to grow, stakeholders face increasing pressure to strengthen safeguards, enhance oversight and ensure that consumer protection measures keep pace with expanding digital access.

   See also:

See also: NGB launches web portal for verified gambling operators in South Africa

The measures come amid rising concerns about changing user behaviour towards online gambling, particularly the growing perception of betting as an alternative income stream.

The Free State province in South Africa is exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and expanded support programmes to mitigate the growing risks associated with online gambling, driven by evolving user behaviour and increased digital accessibility.
