South Africa.- The Free State province is considering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and expanded support programmes as part of efforts to curb the growing impact of online gambling on individuals and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measures come amid rising concerns about changing user behaviour towards online gambling, particularly the growing perception of betting as an alternative income stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during an interview on Lesedi FM\u2019s Imatlafatse programme, acting CEO of the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority (FSGLTA)<\/strong>, Obakeng Seseane<\/strong>, said this shift is exposing more people to gambling-related risks, particularly vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the accessibility of digital platforms, driven by mobile technology and internet penetration, has contributed to higher participation levels and increased risk exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the response, regulators are assessing the use of AI to strengthen identity verification systems. The aim is to prevent underage gambling and restrict access to unauthorised users, while improving compliance across online operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support mechanisms are also being reinforced through programmes run by the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF)<\/strong>. These include self-exclusion tools that allow individuals to block access to gambling platforms, as well as counselling services for those experiencing harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion also underscored the need for increased public awareness and coordinated efforts among stakeholders. Regulators, operators and advocacy groups are encouraged to strengthen education initiatives that highlight the risks associated with gambling and promote responsible behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the sector continues to grow, stakeholders face increasing pressure to strengthen safeguards, enhance oversight and ensure that consumer protection measures keep pace with expanding digital access.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t
