{"id":22704,"date":"2026-04-14T09:02:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T12:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/?p=22704"},"modified":"2026-04-19T06:34:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:34:59","slug":"tanzania-seeks-stronger-gambling-oversight-as-sector-revenue-doubles-to-tsh260bn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/tanzania-seeks-stronger-gambling-oversight-as-sector-revenue-doubles-to-tsh260bn","title":{"rendered":"Tanzania government seeks stronger gambling oversight as sector revenue doubles to TSh260bn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Finance Minister calls for tighter monitoring as industry revenue reaches TSh260bn and supports 30,000 jobs nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Tanzania.- Tanzania\u2019s government has called for <strong>stronger oversight<\/strong> of the gambling sector as the industry\u2019s contribution to public revenue continues to grow, with <strong>revenues doubling<\/strong> from TSh130bn (\u20ac43m) in the 2021\/22 financial year to TSh260bn (\u20ac86m) in 2024\/25 and the sector supporting around <strong>30,000 jobs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during a recent meeting with the Gaming Board of Tanzania in Dodoma, Finance Minister Khamis Omar called on the regulator to intensify supervision of betting and gaming activities while safeguarding the sector\u2019s <strong>economic contribution<\/strong>. \u201cAlthough gambling is legally permitted and has made a meaningful contribution to national revenue, it is essential that the sector continues to be <strong>properly regulated<\/strong>,\u201d said Omar, according to Business Insider Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting, held at Treasury Square, brought together <strong>government officials<\/strong> and the Gaming Board\u2019s leadership, including chairman Modest Mero, as authorities reviewed the regulator\u2019s performance and its role in overseeing the expanding gambling market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mero highlighted the sector\u2019s <strong>economic impact<\/strong>. \u201cThe sector\u2019s contribution to national revenue has increased from TSh130bn (\u20ac43m) in the 2021\/22 financial year to TSh260bn (\u20ac86m) in 2024\/25,\u201d said Mero. He added that the sector currently supports around 30,000 jobs, while also contributing to sports development through sponsorship and related initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crackdown on illegal gambling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry also stressed the need for <strong>closer collaboration<\/strong> between the regulator and other stakeholders to address illegal and <strong>non-compliant gambling activities<\/strong>.
