South Africa.- The Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba<\/strong>, has called for a ban or stricter regulation of online gambling, citing growing concerns over its social and economic impact as betting activity continues to surge across South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments come amid data from the National Treasury showing that betting revenue has risen by around 390 per cent <\/strong>over the past five years. The growth has been largely driven by mobile and online platforms, which have significantly expanded access to gambling across different income groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makgoba warned that the rapid expansion is contributing to rising financial strain among vulnerable populations. He pointed to reported cases of pensioners losing social grant income to betting, students using financial aid to gamble and an increase in psychological harm among younger users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also called for tighter controls on gambling advertising, particularly across digital channels, arguing that aggressive promotions are increasing exposure and participation. Makgoba urged regulators to work more closely with civil society groups to address the risks associated with widespread access to online betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
