Liberia.- Liberia\u2019s gambling regulator is moving to restrict betting-related radio content as lawmakers investigate rising unregulated gambling activity and reports of underage participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government officials familiar with the plan say the National Lottery Authority (NLA)<\/strong> is preparing measures that would stop radio stations from broadcasting betting promotions and interactive gambling programmes. The action is part of a broader response to concerns raised in the Liberian Senate over enforcement gaps and the increasing presence of gambling content across media channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The issue reached the Senate floor after Gbarpolu County senator Amara M. Konneh<\/strong> called attention to the expansion of gambling outlets in several counties, including Montserrado, Bong, Grand Bassa and Margibi<\/strong>. He cited reports indicating that some operators are functioning outside regulatory oversight and that minors are gaining access to betting platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He warned that early exposure increases the risk of addiction and financial harm, while also raising concerns about the placement of betting centres near schools and residential areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the debate, the Senate referred the matter to its Committees on Judiciary, Autonomous Commissions and Gender. The Gender Committee will lead the review, with a mandate to engage the NLA and present its findings and recommendations. Lawmakers have also requested the NLA\u2019s managing director to provide a detailed account of current regulatory controls, enforcement actions and measures to prevent underage gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radio has become a key channel for betting operators in Liberia, offering live odds, call-in games and promotional segments that attract large audiences. If the measure is implemented, the proposed restrictions could affect both operators and broadcasters that rely on gambling-related programmes for revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities are expected to outline compliance requirements, enforcement mechanisms and timelines in the coming weeks as the Senate review progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n
